![]() Jonah also gets quite a bit of time in the spotlight, especially since the game tries to position him as the voice of reason against Lara’s (at times) insane obsession with Trinity, but that’s about as far as that goes. Obviously the main villain does catch quite a bit of screen time, but he more or less is what you expect from a Tomb Raider antagonist. The segment I’m referring to was leaked prior to the game’s release, but I refuse to spoil it here in case it hasn’t been revealed for you yet – but I will say the design of this section is incredibly well done and Lara’s narration as she talks to herself furthers her character development in a way that is both endearing and insightful.įor Shadow’s side characters, they don’t see nearly the same kind of development that Lara does. One in particular (which I will not be spoiling here) will have long-time Tomb Raider fans screaming at their TVs from sheer nostalgia value and excitement. But if you’ve followed along with the reboot and been a fan of the previous two games, you are probably going to feel a thrill from playing as this fully-evolved, badass Lara Croft.īut even beyond Lara’s status as a lethal living weapon, Shadow does a number of things to develop Lara’s character. However, based on my experience with this game and its community, not everyone is happy with Lara’s prowess as a stone cold killer – this is not your mother’s Tomb Raider. Unlike in Rise, certain skills like using rope arrows to pull down barriers in your environment will be readily available to you from the start of the game. She is a skilled huntress who knows how to stalk her pray – no more fumbling and going back to the beginning to learn the rookie skills this time around. Regardless of whether they manage to truly make Lara an anti-hero or turn Dominguez into a sympathetic villain, one thing is very clear: Lara. It’s been the developer’s goal from the very start to pit Lara against Dominguez and Trinity while blurring the lines between who is right and who is wrong – has Lara doomed the world with her carelessness? Is Dominguez’s vision for the world truly evil? The punch might not quite land the way they wanted it to, but the game makes it very clear that Lara is no saint. He wants the Key to remake the world in Trinity’s own image, to “save it” (from his point of view). But her most concrete foe is the man who becomes the face of Trinity for this game, Dr. ![]() The story is truly set in motion when Lara and Jonah travel to Peru and discover an artifact called the Key of Chak Chel – an ancient knife that, when Lara removes from its resting place, sets off a Maya apocalyptic event.Īfter Lara realizes what she’s done, she is confronted by a number of obstacles – ranging from her own mistakes to raging floods and other natural disasters. Shadowkicks off in Mexico with Lara and Jonah scouring clues from Maya ruins in the hope that they can get one step ahead of the series’ main antagonistic force, Trinity. The game picks up shortly after the end of its predecessor, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and directly continues its storyline.
